The Sea for Shannan Dyana McCray by Nafeesa Nichols

With each wave of the ocean

My heart soars

Carrying my soul out to the sea

To meet the sky, to be warmed by the sun, and bathed in the rain

In the slate blue, crystal turquoise green swells

I hear the ancient, beautiful voices of my ancestors –

Carrying my spirit over the tides

Where we dance upon the crests

Dive into the arches

And become one with

The rhythm and song

So that I am at once nowhere and everywhere

So that I am as wide as the Atlantic

And as tiny as a grain of sand on the ocean floor

Here on the waves

I sit always at that sacred moment

Where death and life touch and twirl

Where your spirit and mine recognize each other

Where we know light and love as infinite
